March 12, 2019
SEONGNAM – A WeGO delegation headed by its Secretary General and its program and administrative directors visited Seongnam City Hall this morning to meet with H.E. Mayor Soomi Eun and sign a collaboration agreement for the hosting of this year’s Executive Committee (EXCOM) meeting.
WeGO’s annual convention of top-level decision makers for the organization will be carried out in partnership with the city as its host. This year’s meeting is tentatively scheduled to take place October 14-16, alongside a series of other sessions including technical and cultural tours. Over the course of the proceedings, EXCOM members will decide on key agenda items including the strategic direction of WeGO.
In her talks with Secretary General Kyong-yul Lee, Mayor Eun presented Seongnam’s vision of becoming a global city and its initiatives in smart city development. She described her city’s construction of an augmented reality (AR) museum and highlighted how it was among the first in the nation to introduce a citywide automated bicycle sharing system. The city plans to host an autonomous driving challenge in November.
SG Lee lauded the city on its achievements and encouraged Mayor Eun to use the EXCOM meeting as an opportunity to showcase her city’s best practices to an international audience.
An active member of WeGO since 2015, Seongnam was chosen as this year’s host by popular vote in a competitive bid against Tunisia’s La Marsa. The meeting will be the last for EXCOM before the 2020 General Assembly in Makati.
The city is located just 20 km southeast of capital city Seoul and is the largest city in Gyeonggi Province. Home to Panggyo Techno Valley, a high-tech industrial cluster leading in science technology innovation and global ICT convergence technology, Seongnam is on an active pursuit to become Asia’s “Silicon Valley.”
