WeGO and SEMI Partnership for the Seoul Smart City Prize Special Mention

Seoul, June 26th, 2024WeGO (World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization) and SEMI, the industry association serving the global semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing supply chain, have taken the step to formalize their partnership for the Seoul Smart City Prize, with SEMI joining as the official partner awarding one of the Special Mentions for the Seoul Prize.

Since 1970, SEMI has served as the global platform empowering the chip industry by fostering public-private collaboration on key industry issues, driving alignment on sustainability goals and emissions reporting, and guiding the adoption of AI and digital twins to optimize efficiencies in the industry. SEMI connects more than 3,000 members and 1.5 million professionals worldwide.

The President and CEO of SEMI, Mr. Ajit Manocha, had joined the Seoul Smart City Prize Steering Committee last year when the Prize was first launched and attended the 1st Seoul Smart City Prize ceremony in Seoul as the Prize Presenter for the Tech-InnovaCity Category. Early this year, during his visit in Seoul, Mr. Manocha expressed that he would like to further connect SEMI’s emphasis on learning collectively in innovation through industry and technology collaboration with WeGO’s activities, namely with the Seoul Smart City Prize. Following this discussion, WeGO and SEMI have signed an MoU to formalize the collaboration on the Seoul Smart City Prize this year. The two entities have worked together to develop the description and criteria of the Seoul Smart City Prize Special Mention with SEMI, which will be awarded beginning this year. The SEMI Special Mention will be presented to a company that has demonstrated measurable commitment to clean-grid technology, invested in innovative and novel ways of carbon capture or mobilized a neighborhood, community or city to address pathways to renewable or low-carbon energy sources collectively. Another factor for the award is demonstrating commitment to collaboration through public-private partnerships which is a critical ingredient for success in the transition to net zero. The specific criteria would be 1) Innovative efforts in pursuing sustainability and low-carbon energy sources within the industry; 2) Collaboration through public-private partnerships; and 3) Commitment and application of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework (e.g. contribution to local economy and jobs).

The Seoul Smart City Prize continues to be a beacon of innovation and collaboration, showcasing best practices and successful case studies of human-centric smart city projects around the world. Mr. Manocha will join the Seoul Smart City Prize Ceremony on October 10 to celebrate the winners and, together with WeGO, promote the importance of human-centered smart city and digital inclusion to the world. As the application period for the 2nd edition of the Seoul Smart City Prize is currently ongoing until July 14, interested cities, corporations, and institutions can apply for the prize by visiting the following link: https://www.seoulsmartcityprize.com/
