WeGO successfully hosted the 3rd edition of the Solutions Meet Cities webinar series

September 1st, 2022

SeoulWeGO hosted the third edition of the ‘Solutions Meet Cities’ webinar series, dedicated to Smart Transportation. This webinar series provides an open floor for members and partners to promote their projects and solutions, thus creating opportunities for collaboration on smart city projects and showcasing good examples of sustainable urban innovation.

The online event also showcased project implementation activities by WeGO and the continuous development of the WeGO Smart City Driver –a comprehensive program for cities to plan, finance, and deploy their smart city projects– as an ongoing process to expand the capabilities of the platform and provide more opportunities to WeGO members to achieve their smart city goals.

Goyang special administrative city highlighted its recent smart city initiatives during the webinar. The city showcased its vision for smart transportation development, including the ongoing development of a Smart City Living Lab. In this project, the city is using the synergy of the corporate sector and citizens’ participation to plan and discover local urban challenges and find solutions.

Anyang city, also a WeGO member, showcased a Smart Integrated Center that utilizes AI technologies for developing smart transportation. A joint monitoring operation system comprehensively manages the citizens’ safety on roads (monitoring traffic violations, connected with military bases, police stations, and fire stations). Also, a smart intersection operation screen allows monitoring of real-time traffic in the city and the development of traffic optimization solutions. It also allows emergency vehicles to find the fastest way from one point to another.

Nusantara city master planner, Mr. Sibarani Sofian, presented the Indonesian government plan to develop and build a new capital with a focus on smart transportation. Nusantara will be a high-tech, smart city, surrounded by forest. The first phase of the project is scheduled to start in 2022 and run until 2024, with development extending to 2045. The development of the new capital is to be based on eight main principles, including designing according to natural conditions, the value of unity in diversity, connected-active-accessibility, low carbon emissions, circular and resilient, safe and affordable, comfortable and efficient living through technology, and economic opportunities for all.

In the next session, Korea Dr. Lee Seokjoo from Korea Transport Institute presented smart mobility services in Sejong city and the smart mobility living lab project. One of the components of these projects is a shared mobility service where passengers can ride automated vehicles (6 – 12 passengers) that operate on a fixed or on-demand route. Reservation of the vehicle is available in real-time or pre-reservation via internet or smartphone. Other presented solutions included indicating signals and information on the surface.

Mr. Kitae Kim, head of autonomous driving service strategy, from Hyundai Motor Group, shared its latest technology in robotic transportation focusing on automated driving systems. Hyundai Motor Group developed its driverless ride-hailing service in 2019. Driverless vehicles have been hailed as a way to make rides less expensive while reducing the traffic accidents and deaths caused by human drivers. HMG has been working on developing Robo Taxi, Robo Shuttle, Robo Delivery, and Robo Truck.

Finally, Dwelling, corporate member of WeGO, presented their smart intelligent bus shelter solution, while emphasizing the importance of developing a smart transportation ecosystem, corresponding to the specific environment and needs of each city, and elaborated on the partnership process between cities and the solution providers. Smart intellectual Bus shelters have successfully been constructed in several cities in Korea. These new generation smart intellectual bus shelters have an auto air control system that can check the air quality/temperature/humidity through an IoT controller. They also have a monitoring system for ultrafine dust inside and outside of the smart bus shelter. Radars can sense when the bus arrives and automatically open doors. Finally, smart intellectual bus shelters play a key role in citizens’ safety because they allow citizens to connect to emergency services and have access to relevant public information. WeGO will coordinate the selection process and suggest potential cities for this project.

In a panel discussion moderated by WeGO, the speakers discussed issues, opportunities, and challenges related to smart transportation implementation with international partners. After responding to specific questions from the webinar’s audience, speakers shared their insights on how smart city stakeholders can create synergies for developing more sustainable urban environments through digital technology and innovation. Speakers agreed that the smart transportation agenda should be promoted by international organizations such as WeGO, and extended high appreciation for the activities of the respective organizations. Especially through activities such as the webinar series and startup contest
