WeGO EXCOM Meeting 2024 hosted by Almaty City, Kazakhstan

Almaty, September 20thThe WeGO Executive Committee (EXCOM) is an annual governance meeting of WeGO EXCOM members to review WeGO’s activities, accomplishments and decide on the key directions of WeGO’s future initiatives.

This year’s EXCOM was hosted by one of WeGO’s honorable members, Almaty, with the theme of “Smart City, Smart Citizen” on September 20, 2024 with a presence of 200 live participants held concurrently with the Eurasian Mobile Summit 2024. The summit aligns closely with WeGO’s mission and priorities while exploring the latest advancements in mobile technology and AI across the Eurasian region.

As Central Asia signifies the emergence of developing countries, EXCOM 2024 was marked as a step further towards Central Asian smart city development. Hosted by a city in Central Asia for the first time by Almaty, Kazakhstan’s green former capital, WeGO’s members and partners from different cities around the globe convened to discuss and decide on key agendas that will shape the future of smart cities. WeGO’s efforts to vitalize smart cities in the Central Asia region continues to be in motion through Almaty.

Almaty has been recognized for its strong smart city initiatives by the global community. In 2023 Almaty was one of the winners of the Seoul Smart City Prize held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Today’s gathering underscores our commitment to promoting international cooperation and advancing smart and sustainable development.

In moving forward, WeGO’s nine agendas were approved by EXCOM members including next year’s plans and budget. Also, nine new members were welcomed on board including five local governments and four corporations. WeGO will focus on consolidating existing members and seek far-reaching collaboration with the new members. To implement this objective, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework initiative was authorized for engagement in a variety of new partnership activities.

Across the board, the collective decision was made for Abu-Dhabi, the WeGO Regional Office for MENA Region, to be selected as the next host city of the WeGO EXCOM Meeting 2025. H.E. Omar Al Shaiba, Executive Director – Information Technology Affairs, gave a presentation on Abu Dhabi’s bidding proposal to host the EXCOM next year.
