In April 2020, the Mexico City Government presented an Epidemiological Model which, since March of the same year and to date, constitutes the main method by which hospital bed availability can be guaranteed, and this is based on contagion estimates.

FEATURES

  • The quantitative methodology allows the Mexico City Government to effectively estimate and detect those trends which may affect hospital occupancy.
  • The methodology is of a public nature, as it is intended to be replicable by other states or governments. It can be consulted at: https://modelo.covid19.cdmx.gob.mx/modelo-epidemico
  • With the new methodology, based on deterministic differential equations and on daily data on the susceptible, exposed, infected and recovered (SIER), one can know what hospital intubation capacity is required to adequately attend to the population.

ONGOING RESULTS

  • Based on the model, timely decisions have been made regarding hospital reconversions. This has prevented the health system from being overwhelmed. In other words, even at the most critical moments, hospital beds have been available for city residents.
