KAMPALA – Today the WeGO-sponsored feasibility study (F/S) and pilot project in Kampala was concluded with a final reporting event. The project focused on the development of a smart parking platform and was implemented by SRPOST, a corporate member of WeGO.

SRPOST won the bidding for implementing an integrated smart parking system in Kampala last September, after the selection of Kampala as the beneficiary of the program. The system is operated with the help of intelligent CCTV cameras that will reflect real-time information on available car parking spaces using variables such as time period, price, and geographic location. In addition, the company has developed an integrated software which will be translated into a mobile app for drivers and service providers.

At the final reporting event SRPOST demonstrated the features of the system explaining how it can contribute to relieving traffic congestion and improving safety in the city. WeGO’s Secretary General Kyong-yul Lee delivered his congratulatory remarks in a video message, and Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) Acting Executive Director Samuel Sserunkuuma expressed his support for the project as well. The final reporting was followed by a training session designed to train local personnel in charge to use the system for the trial period of one year.

WeGO also conducted side meetings with several locally-based international organizations such as the World Bank, East African Development Bank, and Korea International Cooperation Agency, to explore possible ways of moving forward the initiated project. Additionally, a meeting with Uganda’s national agency responsible for IT industry and smart city development – also a member of WeGO – was conducted to seek their support for implementing the project on the city-wide scale.

In 2019, Bharatpur Metropolitan City was also selected to receive a sponsored consultancy service to support their efforts of deploying a smart parking system in their city. The city and SRPOST are currently discussing the possibility of initiating a pilot project in the Bharatpur Airport parking lot, which could possibly expand to other parking facilities around the city.

Calls for proposals for the 2020 edition of the F/S will be announced by early February.
