WeGO brings smart city transition learning to young leaders around the globe and online
Seoul, January 10, 2024 – More than 300 students and young professionals have benefitted from the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization’s (WeGO) impactful capacity-building and knowledge-sharing initiative, designed for the next generation of urban leaders. Conducted from October to December 2023, this initiative resulted in the creation of a comprehensive online course titled “Accelerating, Benchmarking, and Communicating Smart and Sustainable Cities’ Transitions.” Additionally, an engaging in-person lecture series titled “Young Urban Leadership: Perspectives in Dialogue” was organized as part of this program.
In response to the aftermath of the pandemic, cities worldwide heeded the imperative to evolve into smart cities, leveraging technology to enhance governance. Consequently, this year’s program centers on exploring both the theoretical frameworks and practical experiences of diverse cities as they transition towards greater inclusivity and sustainability, with an unwavering commitment to ensuring that no citizen is left behind.
Facilitated through an online certificate course, the program featured eight meticulously curated lectures delivered by four esteemed professors: Mr. Danil Kerimi, Dr. Alexandre Hedjazi, Dr. Matteo Tarantino, and Arch. Gabriel Lanfranchi. Covering a spectrum of crucial topics, the lectures delved into the Global Context and Local Conditions of Sustainability, The Metropolitan Century, Tools and Cases for the Ecological Transition in Cities, Data for Urban Inclusion, Communicating Smart and Sustainable Cities, Measuring and Benchmarking Sustainable Smart Cities, Digital Twins and MetaCities, and Integrative, Inclusive, Resilient Cities. These sessions offered a comprehensive exploration of key facets essential to the transformation of cities into more responsive, sustainable, and inclusive urban environments.
On the other hand, a series of five in-person sessions unfolded in significant cities, namely Baku (Azerbaijan), Munich (Germany), Geneva (Switzerland), Milan (Italy), and Athens (Greece). Augmenting the educational journey of WeGO Champions, these sessions incorporated impactful site visits across various city locales. With a collective assembly of 17 proficient professors and experts in the field, students maximized their learning experience, seizing the invaluable opportunity facilitated by WeGO.
This 2024, WeGO is actively exploring collaborations with additional cities, experts, and industry leaders to enrich the program’s content and provide participants with unparalleled insights. By fostering partnerships with key stakeholders in the smart city ecosystem, WeGO aims to create a platform that facilitates knowledge exchange, encourages innovation, and propels cities towards a sustainable and intelligent future.
