September 08, 2022

SeoulIn continuation of the successfully implemented WeGO Smart City Champions, conducted from March to June this year, WeGO aims to expand its mission of promoting people-centered smart cities and empowering youth as future leaders of tomorrow to WeGO members. Essentially, the Smart City Champions is a youth program aiming to build the capacity of young people around the world in the fields of urban development, sustainability, and smart cities. In this respect, WeGO has partnered with Korea University’s Graduate School of Energy and Environment in the second half of the year to launch the course on “Smart City and Energy Transition – Energy Expert Seminar”, starting from September.

This course will enrich the education of all students enrolled at the Graduate School of Energy and Environment of Korea University, as well as WeGO members. It will provide a platform for participants to become acquainted with the diverse perspectives and experiences of major scholars and experts in the field of smart city development and energy transition.

Addressing Climate Change in a Time of Need with Smart City Experts

Climate change is a defining issue of our time. With the adversities faced by growing climate change on our planet, including shifting weather patterns that affect our food supply and rising sea levels that lead to flooding, action needs to be taken today to avoid more costly and harmful consequences in the future. Cities have the unique ability to address these global challenges, especially in adapting climate and energy policy action to the current situation.

As drivers of smart city development, WeGO intends to focus on the most pressing challenges posed on the citizens. By gathering experts in the field of energy and environment, the course aims to identify major causes of climate change, its impact on various population groups and explore practical solutions to address them.

The course consists of 13 lecturers with diverse expertise in energy and environment from all around the world. WeGO also invited back distinguished professors from the WeGO Smart City Champions, including Alexandre Babak Hedjazi, Director of the Global Environment Policy Programme at the Institute for Environmental Sciences, University of Geneva and Ursula Eicker, Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC), Smart, Sustainable, and Resilient Cities and Communities at Concordia University. Furthermore, WeGO invited experts who will bring forth new initiatives, models and approaches to solving the climate issue, such as Graham Colclough, Partner Program Manager at UrbanDNA.

Other esteemed lecturers include Jeffrey Ball, Professor at Stanford University, John Bryne, Distinguished Professor at the University of Delaware, Clark Miller, Professor at Arizona State University, Sharad Lele, Senior Researcher at Ashoka Trust and Job Taminiau, Senior Research Principal at the Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment (FREE).

During this time, participants of the course will be able to engage in an interactive Q&A discussion with the invited lecturers.

Due to the nature of the course in which interactive discussions will be conducted in smaller and intimate settings, the program will be exclusively open for WeGO members and students at the Graduate School of Energy and Environment in Korea University.

Registration is now open to all WeGO members and will close on September 9th. The first lecture of the course will take place on September 16th

Upon the successful completion of the course, WeGO members will also receive a certificate co-signed by the Secretary General of WeGO and the President of Korea University Graduate School of Energy and Environment.
