August 1, 2022

Seoul – The World Cities Summit (WCS) 2022 officially kicked off with an opening remark delivered by Desmond Lee, Minister of National Development and Minister-in-Charge of Social Services Integration in Singapore. The theme for this year’s WCS is “Liveable and Sustainable Cities: Emerging Stronger”. It represents the ambition to not only survive shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic but also to build back even stronger and more resilient than before.

Following the opening remarks, Mayor Oh Se Hoon, the President of WeGO and the Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan Government, delivered special remarks, welcoming the participants from all around the world and congratulating the assembly of the world leaders in the vibrant city, Singapore. He shared his vision on making Seoul an even more attractive city and a city that “goes together with the socially neglected”, which is the motto that he set forth as he took office as Mayor of Seoul again this year. Seoul is the host city of the next Mayors Forum in 2023, Mayor Oh invited all of the participants to visit Seoul next year.

The annual WCS Mayors Forum, an exclusive, by-invitation-only global platform for mayors and city leaders to discuss pressing urban challenges and share best practices, was held prior to the official opening of the World Cities Summit on July 31, 2022. Taking the opportunity forward, the Secretary General of WeGO, Jung Sook Park, participated in the WCS Mayors Forum and shared her view on the importance of citizen-led smart city development in the post COVID-19 pandemic era with various world mayors in the Forum and invited them to Seoul in 2023.
