WeGO Promotes ASEAN Smart City Cooperation with Korean Partners

September 8, 2021

GOYANG – Today, WeGO, the Presidential Committee on New Southern Policy (NSP), and Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) co-organized an event on the theme of “ASEAN Smart City Development Cooperation Forum”. Korean and overseas smart city governments, research institutes, international organizations, experts in the public and private sector joined the event to share cases of global cooperation in smart cities and exchanged various insights on cooperation plans for ASEAN smart cities through Official Development Assistance (ODA).

The forum was a part of the World Smart City Expo (WSCE), hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea. The expo convenes more than 20,000 visitors from 200 cities of 60 countries each year with the aim to build ‘People-Cantered’ smart cities worldwide.

Welcome and congratulatory remarks were given by the Deputy Secretary General of NSP and the President of KRIHS. The ASCN National Representative of Brunei Darussalam Nazri Hj Yousof –who also serves the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunication–joined virtually and encouraged the continued partnerships between Korean and ASCN cities towards achieving the ASCN’s common goal to improve the quality of life of citizens through smart city development.

During the event, WeGO’s Program Manager participated as one of the panelists, shared information on WeGO’s smart city partnership with cities in ASEAN, and contributed to enriching and expanding the proposed cooperation ideas presented by the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) of Thailand, KRIHS, and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH).

Participants from NSP, KRIHS, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the National University of Singapore, and the University of Seoul also shared thoughts on the cooperation with ASEAN, in particular on measures to provide financial support by engaging in active discussions on the prospective ASEAN development cooperation, the smart city ODA programs in Vietnam, and the roles of international organization such as WeGO.

Organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea, WSCE is the largest smart city event in the Asia Pacific region. It convenes 20,000+ visitors from 200 cities of 60 countries each year with the aim to build ‘People-Centered’ smart cities worldwide. This year’s forum was conducted in a hybrid format of online and offline, and live stream was made available through the expo’s official website.

To continue deepen the understanding of the dynamics in ASEAN smart city development and identify the needs of ASEAN cities, WeGO will keep working closely with partners, matchmake ideal solution providers for ASCN action plans, and further develop Smart City Driver database for successful smart city development cooperation.
