WeGO met with C40 Cities

Seoul, October 27, 2023 – It’s the pleasure of the WeGO Secretariat to welcome the visit from the C40 Cities, represented by Ms. Milag San Jose-Ballesteros (Regional Director for East, Southeast Asia & Oceania) and Ms. Nor Hazirah Mohd Ghazali (Senior Manager of Engagement and Partnerships for East, Southeast Asia & Oceania).

The C40 Cities is a global network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities that are working towards climate-related issues. Interestingly, Mayor Oh Se-hoon (the Mayor of Seoul) is not only the President City of WeGO, but also serves as the Vice Chair City of C0 Cities. This has encouraged both the WeGO Secretariat and the C40 Cities to further explore potential collaborations that could leverage Mayor Oh’s voice and presence in the international stage.

During the meeting, the WeGO Secretariat introduced several flagship activities to the C40 Cities, including the Seoul Smart City Prize and the WeGO Smart City Champions. It’s also great to learn that the C40 Cities has recently launched their initiatives for Youth, namely the C40 Youth Hub and the C40 City Youth Engagement Network (CYEN). As the training program for youths, the WeGO Smart City Champions is a good option for both the WeGO Secretariat and the C40 Cities to cultivate and train leaders of tomorrow in the field of smart city and sustainable development.

The WeGO Secretariat extended its appreciation to the C40 Cities for the interest in partnering together. The WeGO Secretariat looks forward to further strengthening the ties and collaborations together.

WeGO was founded by 50 member cities in 2010 as the World e-Governments Organization, hence our acronym. In response to the evolving concept of smart cities, WeGO expanded its vision and mandate at the 7th General Assembly (2017) and its name to the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization. WeGO’s Secretariat is based in Seoul, Korea, and has regional offices in East Asia (Chengdu, China), the Mediterranean (Beyoglu, Turkey), Africa (Abuja, Nigeria), Middle East & North Africa (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), Latin America (Cuenca, Ecuador), and Central Asia (Almaty, Kazakhstan). As the leading platform on smart city development, WeGO’s mission is to share knowledge and good practices in e-Governance; strengthen administrative efficiency and transparency; advance digital capacity; facilitate civic involvement; bridge the digital divide and inequality; and promote cooperation solidarity among cities and local governments around the world.

WeGO serves for its members as their international platform to improve the quality of life, innovate in the delivery of public services, and strengthen regional competitiveness.
