Adopting smart city technology, the new virus tracker system allows data of confirmed COVID-19 patients to be gathered and analyzed within 10 minutes. Under Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC)’s lead, 27 public and private, 3 mobile carriers, and 22 credit card companies have joined forces to expedite contact tracing. The new system has helped speed up the contact tracing process and stem the spread of COVID-19.

FEATURES

  • This system uses a ‘smart city data hub platform’ technology that enables real-time analysis of big data in various areas from transportation, energy, to environment, and safety.
  • Under KCDC’s lead, 27 public and private organizations including the National Police Agency, Credit Finance Association, 3 mobile carriers, and 22 credit card companies have joined forces to expedite contact tracing.
  • Using security camera footage, credit card records, GPS data from cellphones and car navigation systems, authorities are able to pinpoint exactly where a person has been.
  • The system automatically traces and generates a timeline of a confirmed patient’s activities, analyzes the large-scale outbreak area (hot spot), and uses it to identify the source of infection in the area.
  • The information is exclusively for the use of KCDC and epidemiologists of city and provincial governments.

ONGOING RESULTS

  • The system reduces the analysis time of contact tracing to less than 10 minutes.
  • The system speeds up the release of transparent and accurate information about the virus (via districts’ official webpages and emergency alert messages).
