Cauayan City selected as beneficiary of Project Implementer 2020

https://we-gov.org/?kboard_content_redirect=867

April 3, 2020

SEOUL – WeGO has selected Cauayan City, Philippines, as the beneficiary local government of the Project Implementer 2020 for its project proposal toward developing a data dashboard to minimize the impact of tropical storms on the city.

Formerly branded as the “Smart Sustainable City Feasibility Study Program,” or “F/S,” WeGO’s Project Implementer aims to implement pilot projects that align with local and national development goals. For each selected submission, WeGO sponsors the services from a consultant and solution provider with the needed expertise, up to an amount of approx. USD 92,000. In turn,
local governments are required to contribute both financially and in kind toward further expansion of the project.

This year’s request for proposals (RFP) under the theme of “Enabling Better Decision-Making Through Digital Infrastructure” sought to attract projects related to building infrastructure that
enables better decision-making by involving not just governments, but citizens and business as well, in an intelligent connected ecosystem.

Among the 12 submissions from local governments across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Cauayan City’s proposal stood out for its focus on crisis management, an essential skill for all levels of government in confidently navigating through series of disruptive and unexpected events including the COVID-19 pandemic. By developing a Digital Twin Data Dashboard integrated to a CCTV system, the city expects to better cope with tropical storms and expand its national resilience network, resulting in improved disaster management and increased citizen wellbeing.

On April 13, WeGO will release an RFP for consulting companies and solution providers interested in carrying out the feasibility study and pilot project. Applications can be submitted until
May 22 and the pilot project is expected to be carried out from July to December.

For initiatives of those local governments that were not selected, WeGO will be reaching out to its partners to find interest in funding and supporting the initiatives.

March 6, 2020

PANAJI – WeGO signed an MOU with All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), opening up for more expansion to the South Asian subcontinent, and networked with local stakeholders on the occasion of the 5th South Asian Cities Summit.

Founded in 1926, AIISLG is a research and training institution that works closely with local and central governments, and national and international agencies to reinforce good local governance across India. Within the framework of the MOU, the two organizations will collaborate on joint capacity building programs under the context of AIILSG’s membership with WeGO, among other initiatives such as AIISLG’s establishment of its Virtual Library, an open platform where local governments can access courses on different urban areas.

WeGO also discussed the possibility of organizing joint training programs with the Indian National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), particularly on the topic of smart procurement. To further cooperation, NIUA invited WeGO to attend the Indian Urban Forum in New Delhi, tentatively in late October.

At the two -day summit organized by AIISLG for mayors and senior officials from municipal corporations in the region, WeGO presented on how it works to build sustainable cities by supporting national and regional networks such as India’s Smart Cities Mission and the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN), and by assisting with project implementation through WeGO's Smart City Driver.

On the topic of “Digital Innovations for Data-Driven Future Cities”, WeGO also shared best practice cases from around the world along with those of its members in Asia-Pacific, including Goyang, Jakarta, La Union, Makati, Seberang Perai, and Seoul. It also showcased solutions of some of its corporate members, as well as WeGO's own solutions such as its Activator and Civic Participation System (CPS).

As a result of WeGO’s mission, three more Nepalese municipalities joined as members, Bhadrapur, Kanakai, and Shivasatakshi. Accordingly, WeGO’s total membership is now at 201.

WeGO reconnects with members, strengthens UN partnerships at WUF10

https://we-gov.org/?kboard_content_redirect=846

February 12, 2020

ABU DHABI – WeGO took the stage at three UN-organized sessions on sustainable and inclusive urban development and the SDGs, to share its contributions to smart cities and broaden its international network, at the 10th World Urban Forum (WUF10) held February 9-12 in Abu Dhabi.

Over 18,000 attendees from around the globe gathered at the world’s premier conference on cities, organized by UN-Habitat and hosted this year by WeGO member Abu Dhabi. The theme of the event focused on harnessing culture and innovation as drivers of sustainable urban development to achieve the New Urban Agenda and SDGs by 2030.

In a panel discussion led by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) to review the key outcomes of the 7th Asia-Pacific Urban Forum, a regional offshoot of WUF, WeGO emphasized the importance of national and regional smart city networks such as the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) for localization of the SDGs. Cities in the audience were encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities provided by WeGO to benchmark the best practice of cities such as Seoul, and to develop their own smart city action plans in partnership with the range of public- and private-sector stakeholders brought to the table by WeGO.

In another session organized by the UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD), WeGO presented on how it supports inclusivity and smart tech through its activities, products, and services tailored to the needs of cities in the Global South, and other programs such as its co-organized annual startup competition Citypreneurs. Local officials in the audience from cities across Africa expressed interest in working with WeGO, and continued one-on-one consultations at the organization’s booth in the exhibition hall.

Among several new flagship programs announced by UN-Habitat at WUF10 was one on “People-focused Smart Cities,” which aims to raise USD 10 million in funding and USD 1 billion from MDBs and the private sector over the next 8-10 years to establish a multi-stakeholder digital urban innovation fund toward investments in bankable projects. At its launch, WeGO declared its full support for the program, and pledged to mobilize its own network to finance and carry out smart city projects, as well as to contribute through capacity building training programs and knowledge resources.

On the sidelines of WUF10, WeGO reconnected with members Abu Dhabi—a founding member in 2010; Brussels Capital Region—with which it co-organized a smart city symposium last year in Seoul; Kampala—beneficiary of last year’s feasibility study and pilot project on smart parking; and Moscow—with which it discussed ways to support the upcoming Moscow Urban Forum.

WeGO also strengthened current and prospective partnerships with Citynet; Fira Barcelona—organizer of the Smart City Expo World Congress—and its new initiative Tomorrow City; Global Resilient Cities Network—known for its 100 Resilient Cities; Metropolis; and the Smart City Institute Japan, among others.

February 6, 2020

SEOUL – Canadian clean air technology company WeavAir, a member of WeGO and winner of the WeGO’s Secretary General Award in 2018, received the Best Innovation Award today at the final ceremony of the Seoul Global Challenge.

Launched in August last year, Seoul Global Challenge – organized by WeGO member Seoul Business Agency – is a competition seeking to find the most innovative fine dust solutions for the subway, one of Seoul’s most pressing issues. WeavAir was selected as one of the 10 finalists among 100+ applicants from eight countries.

For the final round, the finalists had the opportunity to install and operate their solutions inside the subway tunnels, platforms, and trains during the month of January. They were evaluated by both a jury and a pre-selected group of citizens on their effectiveness in reducing fine dust levels.

Winners were awarded based on categories including effectiveness in reducing fine dust, economic viability, innovation, interoperability, and execution. WeavAir has been recognized for its patented air purification technology and received the Best Innovation Award at the Seoul Fine Dust Expo 2020. Finalists will additionally receive benefits including follow-up support for possible funding and connections with public testbeds.

The second phase of the Seoul Global Challenge, under the same theme, is expected to start in April this year.

Four cities in Mongolia become WeGO members

https://we-gov.org/?kboard_content_redirect=839

January 25, 2020

CHOIBALSAN – WeGO welcomed four new local government members from Mongolia at a signing ceremony of an event carried out by institutional member Healthy City Network of Mongolia (HCSC).

Altai, Choibalsan, Erdenet, and Sainshand—provincial capitals of Govi-Altai, Dornod, Orkhon and Dornogovi, respectively—are WeGO’s newest members from Mongolia after founding member Ulaanbaatar and HCSC, which joined last year. Erdenet and Choibalsan are also the second and fourth-largest cities in the nation after the capital.

The signing of membership forms took place in the company of over a dozen local leaders on the occasion of the Annual Meeting of Healthy Cities Mayors of Mongolia, hosted this year by Choibalsan. At the meeting, WeGO presented as an international partner on smart cities and the opportunities it offers for cities aiming to become smarter and more sustainable.

During the mission, WeGO separately met with the Vice Mayor of Ulaanbaatar to explore ways to support in the city’s implementation of smart city projects, with the assistance of international partners such as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), whose country representative office was also visited. Priority areas of focus that were commonly identified included traffic management, air quality, and waste management. The city is also continuing talks with WeGO on its involvement in the inaugural meeting of the Northeast Asian Smart Cities Network (NEASCN), slated to take place later this year.

Besides project implementation, WeGO’s new members expressed interest in the organization’s many activities including capacity building programs for local government officials.

With the addition of the new members, WeGO’s worldwide membership is now at 198.

WeGO’s F/S and pilot in Kampala completed, pilot in Bharatpur in discussions

https://we-gov.org/?kboard_content_redirect=835

January 9, 2020

KAMPALA – Today the WeGO-sponsored feasibility study (F/S) and pilot project in Kampala was concluded with a final reporting event. The project focused on the development of a smart parking platform and was implemented by SRPOST, a corporate member of WeGO.

SRPOST won the bidding for implementing an integrated smart parking system in Kampala last September, after the selection of Kampala as the beneficiary of the program. The system is operated with the help of intelligent CCTV cameras that will reflect real-time information on available car parking spaces using variables such as time period, price, and geographic location. In addition, the company has developed an integrated software which will be translated into a mobile app for drivers and service providers.

At the final reporting event SRPOST demonstrated the features of the system explaining how it can contribute to relieving traffic congestion and improving safety in the city. WeGO’s Secretary General Kyong-yul Lee delivered his congratulatory remarks in a video message, and Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) Acting Executive Director Samuel Sserunkuuma expressed his support for the project as well. The final reporting was followed by a training session designed to train local personnel in charge to use the system for the trial period of one year.

WeGO also conducted side meetings with several locally-based international organizations such as the World Bank, East African Development Bank, and Korea International Cooperation Agency, to explore possible ways of moving forward the initiated project. Additionally, a meeting with Uganda’s national agency responsible for IT industry and smart city development – also a member of WeGO – was conducted to seek their support for implementing the project on the city-wide scale.

In 2019, Bharatpur Metropolitan City was also selected to receive a sponsored consultancy service to support their efforts of deploying a smart parking system in their city. The city and SRPOST are currently discussing the possibility of initiating a pilot project in the Bharatpur Airport parking lot, which could possibly expand to other parking facilities around the city.

Calls for proposals for the 2020 edition of the F/S will be announced by early February.
